Anson Call was born in Fletcher, Vermont, on May 13, 1810. In 1833 he married Mary Flint and they moved to a farm in Madison, Ohio. Call was raised in a Methodist family, but in 1836 was baptized into the Mormon faith by William Smith, brother of Joseph Smith. In 1838 the family moved to Far West, Missouri, where they faced continual religious persecution that resulted in the theft of their family farm. John Williams Gunnison, army topographical engineer in charge of surveying a route to the West for the Pacific Railroad, was born in New Hampshire and graduated from West Point in 1835. He served as ordnance officer in the Seminole War in Florida and in making surveys in Georgia.
